I couldn't, in good conscience, start a blog to our new dog without honoring the dog that started it all. The dog that bonded us together to make us a family.
Princess Zoë was her official name. My then, fiance, and I researched dogs that were good for families, good for kids, and easily trained. Little did we know that she would be good for us, become the heart of our family and train us in ways we never imagined. Zoë 'trained' us on how to be loyal, how to welcome someone with a happy face after a hard day, how to listen without judgment, how to love fiercely and as difficult as it is, how to love and let go.
There was nothing we wouldn't do with Zoë. Cutting down the Christmas tree, walks through the forest and fields, trick or treating, family dinners. She instantly became the little sister and would soon grow into the protective big sister.
Our boys just naturally incorporated Zoë into daily life. Games and playing ball, and going to the park, of course, involved their caring older 'sister'.
Even times with friends involved our Zoë.
And while she wasn't technically trained to be a therapy dog, she seemed to just know what to do when our son diagnosed with autism needed her.
Zoë we didn't know just how much you were the heart of our family until you were gone. Our hearts broke in ways that will never heal when you had to leave us. We will forever hold our precious memories in our hearts.
I really hope you mastered catching a ball!
We love you.
